The 998cc radial valve inline-four-cylinder F4 motor produces a claimed 186.3bhp@12,900rpm. It has lighter crankcases and a redesigned crankshaft which is 2kg heavier and has 47% more inertia. Land- or carrier-based, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II flaunted speed, great climb, and altitude capabilities, and a fearsome array of armament. Versatility, too, was a strong point, for the Phantom filled many roles, from dogfighter to ground-attack jet.
